Adventures in eating

This past weekend, I went to the Passport DC event with some friends. 55 embassies opened their doors and allowed the public to walk through their embassies, ask questions about their countries, and even sample their food. We went to Iraq, Peru, Trinidad & Tobago, Botswana, and we almost made it to Australia and the Philippines. It was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed seeing the art, hearing the music, and hanging out with my friends before we graduate.

The Iraqi embassy was definitely the prettiest. Look at this fireplace mantle!
The music in Trinidad & Tobago was awesome. This kid was gettin' down!

We drank Pisco Sours in Peru, ate Medjool dates and burek in Iraq, filled our pockets with sweets from Trinidad & Tobago, and sampled several traditional dishes from Botswana. I was the only one, however, who tried the Mopane worm that was offered to us in Botswana. You can read all about this particular dish here and here, if you're interested. It had definitely been dried and then cooked in a spicy peanut sauce. I should have taken a picture, but I ate it as soon as the lady dropped it on my plate, afraid that I would lose my nerve if I looked at it for too long.

This picture, from ZimboKitchen.com, is sorta what they looked like:

This was only the second insect I've ever tried before, but the worm was definitely tastier than the Mexican crickets I ate at Oyamel at a birthday party a few years ago. I really, really, really hate crickets/grasshoppers. I don't know that I'd eat the Mopane worm again, but I'm glad I tried it.

This weekend, the European Union embassies will be open and I can't wait!

Yeah, I don't think I'll be making them myself anytime soon . . . I'm always willing to try what others make though!
